How to light the MOON fire basket

MOON is the ultimate fire basket for effortless and smokeless fire. Its revolutionary wood gasification technology allows for dual combustion, which can put an end to smoke. Decide for yourself whether you prefer to use firewood or pellets for your fire.

How to light MOON with pellets

Step 1

Fill the MOON with pellets, leaving the perforated circle below the opening free (approx. 10-12 kg of pellets).

Step 2

Place 4-5 pieces of kindling wool on top of the pellets.

Step 3

Moisten the wool and the pellets with Fuel

Step 4

Light the wool, watch the pellets start to burn and after a few minutes you will see the fascinating play of flames.

How to light MOON with wood

Step 1

Align MOON so that it stands upright. Fill the fire basket with wood or pellets.

Step 2

Look into the opening in the MOON from above and place two plancha feet on the nozzle; the third will automatically settle.

Step 3

Check that the plancha is securely in place, then light the fire.

Step 4

Let the plancha heat up for 10-15 minutes at full flame, then place the grillables on it.

When the wind blows out the flames: how to rekindle the fire

Step 1

When using pellets, the fire is more sensitive to wind than when using firewood. In both cases, however, the fire can easily be rekindled.

Step 2

If a gust of wind extinguishes the fire and turns the flames to smoke, take your barbecue or fire tongs, grab a firelighter and light it.

Step 3

Place the burning firelighter in your MOON fire basket. This will reignite the fire and make the smoke disappear in no time..

Frequently asked questions

Does MOON really burn without smoke?

Once the fire is properly established, very nearly. MOON uses wood gasification: air is drawn up between the two walls of the bowl, heated on the way, then injected back over the fire through the jets around the rim. That second burn consumes the gases that would otherwise leave as smoke. Expect some smoke in the first few minutes while the fire gets going.

Can I burn logs, or does it have to be pellets?

Both work. Pellets give the most even, longest and cleanest burn, and they are easy to measure out. Logs give a more traditional look and a bit of crackle. Either way, use dry, untreated wood.

How long does one filling last?

Around two hours. MOON 45 takes 10-12 kg of pellets.

What is the difference between the low stand and the high stand?

Purely how you use it. The low stand sits MOON at ground level, like a traditional fire bowl. The high stand raises it to a comfortable standing height, which suits grilling with the plancha and puts the warmth closer to seated guests. The stand isn't currently sold as a separate item — each Fire Basket variant comes with its own stand included.

Can I use MOON on a balcony or a wooden deck?

On a balcony, check your building's rules and your tenancy or lease agreement first. On any combustible surface, use the high stand or a non-combustible base, keep well clear of walls, railings and anything overhead, and never leave the fire unattended.

How much ash does it make, and how do I clean it out?

Very little. The gasification burn leaves only a small amount of fine ash, and it drops into the removable ash tray. Let everything cool completely, then lift the tray out and empty it.

Why has the ring around the nozzles changed colour?

That is expected, and it is not a fault. The stainless steel around the air jets runs extremely hot and develops a permanent bronze-to-blue heat patina. Every MOON ends up with a slightly different pattern.

Can MOON stay outside all year?

Yes, it is built for outdoor use. We'd still recommend covering it or keeping it under shelter over winter to keep rain out of the bowl and slow surface staining. Empty the ash tray before storing so damp ash is not left sitting against the steel.

Can I turn my MOON into a grill later on?

Yes. The MOON Plancha drops straight onto the bowl and turns it into a wood-fired griddle. It's available separately.
